I caught up with an artist, Mike Gibson, for a quick chat about his art, influences, and all in between.

Ever since the moment he could pick up a pencil, he had always an interest in drawing, he reflects on his parent’s perception of how got into art. “I always had art as a hobby throughout my childhood and school and was always encouraged to pursue it,” he said continuing, “It wasn’t until the age of 17/18 I decided to take my drawings online where it surprisingly became popular and gathered a following and notice from big names!” He began to see his art as a career and no longer as a hobby once he was getting noticed.

He is mostly an Instagram artists and when asked about his influences, he replied, “I get mad inspired by the talent I come across.” He is always trying out new things and styles but identifies himself as a ‘realism’ artist.

When asked about his favourite artwork, he stated, “I have so many pieces that I couldn’t decide I love illustrators.” All his colour work is his favourite pieces, “I’m more drawn towards colour than black and white.”

He couldn’t compare himself to any other artists, but he commented, “There’s so many talented artists out there that I do look towards but I would love to really set my own standard of originality and not to be compared to.” He stands alone making his art original and rememberable.

Reminising on his past work, he stated on his evolution of his art work, “I’ve been diverse with my work, my detail has come along I am by no means ‘there yet’ detail wise.” He has improved in many ways, getting better with each piece.

An artistic outlook on life for him is to take chances with things that are uncertain. He is fearless, “Don’t be afraid to try new things! Different is always good,” he said.

In the near future, Mike wants to travel more, but he prefers not knowing what’s around the corner. He finds an artists career much unexpected, yet exciting. But, he has a lot of big plans for the New Year and looks forward to the next chapter of his life.

The best piece of advice Mike has been given is, “Surround yourself with people that reflect who you want to be and how you want to feel, energies are contagious.”
